Sonnet on Family

If I'd a mind to, I could start a cult,
And find some folk more vulnerable than I,
And onto them my wishes catapult,
My un-lived life by that means satisfy.
Their weaknesses and secrets I'd exploit,
To maximise my power and prestige,
At charm and double-dealing I'm adroit,
But... I don't need my friends to be my liege!

The family I've chosen all chose me;
A quarter-century of tea and talk. 
My daughters, whom I didn't choose, are free;
Their choices make, not in my footsteps walk.
Be careful that the family you choose
Are walking in, not standing on your shoes.
