Sonnet on Beauty

The eye of the beholder looks my way,
And I'm reflected in his mirror shades;
I'm looking very painted-up today,
Like sundry hundred-thousand other maids. 
And stunted, hungry, bumptious, ugly chaps
Just bore me when they try to talk to me...
Try saying something I've not heard, perhaps?
I loathe their superficiality. 

Don't focus on the skin-deep, it's a sham!
If seeing red and pink has caused the spark
Remove the shades, behold me as I am,
But what you see's a black cat in the dark.
And what you thought was beauty's just disguise,
So close the case, and look into my eyes.
