Pennies From Heaven Sonnets

Having already unintentionally written a set of ten sonnets – Fragments Of Hell – I was more deliberate with this collection. I still didn’t have an overarching plan; I just let the ideas bubble up through word association, making connections between seemingly unconnected things.

I’ve use the same metrical structure and rhyme scheme as with the previous sonnets, but you don’t really need to know anything about that if you’d prefer not.

Awakening

When Hamlet said "to be, or not to be"
Each aspect of his life had hit a wall...

Miracles

Now through the looking glass with no way back,
You promised me a rose garden... What's this?

Love

Uh-oh, the L word rears its clichéd head:
It's all you need; a many-splendored thing...

Secrets

When gamblin' you should always bet on red,
When smugglin' best the speed limit obey...

Humanity

While monkeys get a hand-job at the zoo,
The Nothingheads reject their birth control...

Beauty

The eye of the beholder looks my way,
And I'm reflected in his mirror shades...

Gender

When girls can do the things boys used to do,
What things can boys do now to girls impress?

Family

If I'd a mind to, I could start a cult,
And find some folk more vulnerable than I...

Connection

When rat-trapped in a sol-i-tary cage,
When disconnected from the circuit board...

Revolution

Metallic lilac Prince, you rescued me
At age fourteen, Awakening did bring...

Big Up

Pennies from Heaven” is a 1936 American popular song with music by Arthur Johnston and lyrics by Johnny Burke. It was introduced by Bing Crosby with Georgie Stoll and his Orchestra in the 1936 film of the same name.

It was recorded in 1936 by Billie Holiday

Pennies from Heaven (lyrics)

Oh, every time it rains
It rains pennies from heaven
Don't you know each cloud contains
Pennies from heaven?
You'll find your fortune fallin'
All over town
Be sure that your umbrella
Is upside down

Trade them for a package of
Sunshine and flowers
If you want the things you love
You must have showers
So when you hear it thunder
Don't run under a tree
There'll be pennies from heaven
For you and me
