Sonnet on Freedom

I dreamed a dream last night, and so did you,
In mine a basket tethered 'neath balloon
Was paradise, was happiness full due,
In yours you made your prison a cocoon.
You writhe and scratch and struggle to escape,
You break the surface letting in the light,
You fear the sun, eschew the mouths agape,
While predators anticipate your flight.

But first you have to wait for wings to dry,
For tongues to wag and fingers fairly point,
And hags who foully furrow brows ask why
You put their broken noses out of joint.
Ignore them, they are tethered, you are free;
Jump in and conquer rooftops, fly with me.
