Sonnet on Expression

When selfie stylings wanting to portray
And plastered up with lippy you will pout,
But I've got better power games to play:
Jump in the jam, turn up, tune up, drop out.
I'll strum now softly, siren singing sweet
Of windmills and of rainbows, keep in time,
Ain't misbehavin' baby, tap your feet,
There's reason in the rabbit hole of rhyme.

There's righteousness in regularity,
Revisiting our recreations past,
Recovering from our disparity;
From rectifying first, comes making last.
Bin bitter dregs, sip from a sweeter cup,
Stay on the square, surrender, pucker up.

big up

👄 “The Windmills of Your Mind” recorded by Dusty Springfield for her 1969 debut album Dusty in Memphis

👄 “Over the Rainbow” written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, in which it was sung by actress Judy Garland in her starring role as Dorothy Gale. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became Garland’s signature song.

👄 “Ain’t Misbehavin’” from the sound track of Gentlemen Marry Brunettes (1955) based on the 1927 novel But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes by Anita Loos.

Anita Loos authored the 1925 novel and 1926 play Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which had been adapted into the highly successful 1953 film of the same name, starring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe. The studio attempted to repeat the formula, with Russell returning but Jeanne Crain stepping in for a presumably otherwise engaged Monroe.

👄 “Bye Bye Baby” from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

Although I know that you care,
Won't you write and declare
That though on the loose,
You are still on the square
