Pearly Queen Sonnets

I wrote these sonnets on 5 Jan 2017 inspired by details from Pu55y Pow3r Pearly Queen, a wearable art piece I had made five years earlier in 2012.

By the time I came to write these sonnets I had moved out of London and wasn’t performing Spoken Word. I must have felt like I had some final points to make. After this I didn’t write rhymes again until 2023 for my Masters Degree.

A heart with two arrows going through it made of pearl buttons sewn onto black fabric

Truce

When forty thieves despatched and ruined are
By one disarming woman, guilelessly...
A butterfly made of pearl buttons sewn onto black fabric

Freedom

I dreamed a dream last night, and so did you,
In mine a basket tethered 'neath balloon..
A pouting lips made of pearl buttons sewn onto black fabric

Expression

When selfie stylings wanting to portray
And plastered up with lippy you will pout...
A peace dove with an olive branch in its beak made of pearl buttons sewn onto black fabric

Peace

I fully know on whom to pin the blame,
It wasn't you, I see that good and well...

Big up

At the time I wrote these sonnets a year had just passed since the death of Amos Bowler who designed the Fish Skeleton on the back of my wearable art piece Pu55y Pow3r Pearly Queen.

I had already referred to the horse-drawn hearse at his funeral when I wrote the Athena Sonnets in March 2016, in Sonnet on Communicating:

"A carousel that whirls you up the hill,
Whose feathered horses pull a leaden load..."

Amos was a supporter and collaborator who had a massive impact on me personally and creatively. Eventually I will get around to posting up the art we made together.

The Fish Skeleton design had originally been for the Fish Island Street Party in 2009, Amos spray-painted it onto hundreds of fabric triangles and we sewed them into miles of bunting.

However sewing over a thousand buttons on a jacket was all my own work, and did get me compliments from some genuine Pearly Kings.
