Sonnet on Sacrifice (The Hanged Man XII)

A sacrifice in chess may cost a pawn
But ultimately helps to win the game;
In baseball, while the batter looks forlorn
His teammates all advance in step the same.
Young goats should being sacrificed avoid,
Lest cloven hooves forever silenced be;
But stars of stage and sticky celluloid
Still twinkle bright for all eternity.

Think twice before you take one for the team,
Your blackout curtains must remain tight shut,
For if the searchlight spies you in its beam
You'll be dispatched to sanctify the glut.
Made sacred or made asinine, or fowl,
It all amounts to throwing in the towel.

The Hanged Man XII

Picture: Guitar legend Jimi Hendrix died aged 27 on 18 September 1970 thus ensuring his immortality as an artist. The coroner “concluded that Hendrix aspirated his own vomit and died of asphyxia while intoxicated with barbiturates” and recorded an open verdict due to lack of evidence.
