Sonnet on Magic (The Magician I)

Too many and too amateur are cooks
Who, having no imagination, must
Depend on finding recipes in books,
And in another's magic wholly trust.
Their rituals are moribund and dull,
Their incantations tend to overplay
Their knowledge, and their prejudices cull
All magic; they must find a better way.

There's magic in most everything we do,
In all the thoughts and feelings we project;
Be careful what you wish for ingénue,
Now burn your books, stop being circumspect.
You're egg-bound and your ego's hit a wall;
Far better spellbound, waiting for the fall.

The Magician I

Picture: Peter Green started Fleetwood Mac in 1967 as a blues band and wrote Black Magic Woman which was a colossal hit for Santana. He spent a weekend on acid with a cult in Munich in 1970 and has been profoundly mentally ill ever since.

[I wrote that in 2015. Peter died in 2020.]
