Sonnet on Beginning (The Fool XXII)

Upon the hill the fool will stand alone,
And treasure up the bounty in his sack,
And stick his fork in deep unto the bone,
And think about his existential lack.
Considers he the precipice beyond,
Goes barefoot where the angels fear to tread,
Grown garrulous, of chatter over-fond,
So gives to them his battered shoes of red.

And gives to them his musket, fife and drum,
His chattels, goods and heavy ball and chain,
A high and lonely life's alright for some,
But now becomes an all-consuming bane.
Beginning to reactivate his heart,
And willing he to make a novel start.

The Fool XXII

Picture: cover of the single “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes” by Elvis Costello (1977)

Oh I used to be disgusted
And now I try to be amused.
But since their wings got rusted,
You know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain,
That's when I knew that I could not refuse.
And I won't get any older, now the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
