Sonnet on Balance (Temperance XIV)

Don't look for balance in the news reports,
They're all designed to twist the way you think;
Vacations in the terrorist resorts
Will only leave you floating in the drink. 
The millions displaced by savage wars
Don't want to take your home or job or wife,
Don't want you to be selfless Santa Claus,
'Cause all they want's a decent, peaceful life. 

And listening to scum scream "take them out"
Perpetuates the hatred; take them in,
And show them what we're made of, leave no doubt
That out-and-out false fascists never win. 
Unless of course it's "OUT out", comrade mine...
In that case we should fetch the cheese and wine.

Temperance XIV

Picture: José “Pepe” Mujica is known as the sandal-wearing, VW Beetle-driving, farm-living “poorest president in the world.” He donates most of his $12,000 monthly salary to charity and lives in a one-bedroom home, even though a recent report indicates his assets to be well into the six-figure range.

One hundred children orphaned by the Syrian civil war could find a home in Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica’s summer retreat, “a mansion and riverfront estate surrounded by rolling pastures.”

(Mujica’s term as president ended in March 2015.)
