Literary Limericks
Classic novels summarised as limericks on 27 November 2015 for a competition on the Ultimate Limericks group on Facebook.
Literary Limerick #1
Hitched a ride with some Vogons most foul,
Lack of tea didn't half make him howl,
Several years in pyjamas,
Classified "mostly harmless",
Don't Panic! Hang on to your towel.
Literary Limerick #2
I would nurse a bad case of the blues,
So long as I don't have to choose:
Full bottle in front o' me,
Full frontal lobotomy,
Nest of vipers, or nest of cuckoos.
Literary Limerick #3
Having been fast asleep several hours,
He had missed all the meteor showers,
But the whole human race
Had been slapped in the face...
He vowed never to "say it with flowers!"
Literary Limerick #4
Las Vegas's savage éclat's
Too gonzo for you scaredy cats,
Always retain counsel
'Cause drugs by the ounce'll
Invariably send you quite BATS!
the literature
I didn’t win the competition. I thought the point was to hint at the books by using as many identifying features without actually naming the book title, whereas the winner put the title of the book in their limerick.
I’m not bitter. But I was robbed, I mean, #3 should have won.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
by Douglas Adams
The broad narrative of Hitchhiker follows the misadventures of the last surviving man, Arthur Dent, following the demolition of the Earth by a Vogon constructor fleet to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Dent is rescued from Earth’s destruction by Ford Prefect—a human-like alien writer for the eccentric, electronic travel guide The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy—by hitchhiking onto a passing Vogon spacecraft.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
by Ken Kesey
Chief Bromden’s tale (of) rebellious Randle Patrick McMurphy, who faked insanity to serve his sentence for battery and gambling in the hospital rather than at a prison work farm. The head administrative nurse, Nurse Ratched, rules the ward with absolute authority and little medical oversight.

by John Wyndham
The narrative begins with Bill in hospital, his eyes bandaged after having been splashed with triffid poison from a stinger. During his recovery he is told of an unexpected green meteor shower. The next morning, he learns that the light from the unusual display has rendered any who watched it blind.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
by Hunter S Thompson
In 1971, journalist Raoul Duke and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, are driving from LA to Las Vegas to cover the Mint 400 Motorcycle race. Along the way, they pick up a hitchhiker, and Duke explains the preparation for the trip, including gathering several drugs and renting the “Great Red Shark”. Shortly after explaining, the two scare off the hitchhiker, and then take a large dose of LSD and finish the drive to Vegas.
