General Limericks

All sorts, mostly written in 2015 and posted to my Facebook page.

Myna Bird Limerick

Purple haze or a mist of red hue;

You can paint it black, yellow or blue;

Vie en Rose won't define 'er,

Rainbow followers make myna

Kia-Ora orange, thank you.

Written 11 May 2015, referencing various sonnets from Pennies From Heaven which use colour a lot, and also Attention Seeker where I started referring to myself as a myna bird. [Kia-Ora is pronounced “key-ora” and was advertised as being “too orangey for crows.”]

Birthday Limerick (for Sara Hirsh)

On your name day you'll ever beware a

Stray "H" by whomever should dare; a

Word mis-spoken; y'are a

Blonde poet called Sara,

And I'm a bird myna called Sara.

Written 11 May 2015 for a poet with a completely different name to mine, which happens to be spelled the exact same way. We both detest people adding the H.

Jay Base Limerick

This "female albino Don Letts"
Keeps two dozen donkeys as pets,
Keeps them untranquilised,
Gets their egos resized;
She never has any regrets.

Written 12 June 2015 in a word battle with Jay Base who had said:

Wow!
Your grammer [sic] is crammer avec le vicious viscus bisquits
Conquistadors and moors raise floors and florets
Female albino don letts.
Words are nice but im not very good with em. Bum

Knickers Limerick

The thing about these Hackney Wickers
I'm told, is they're wearing no knickers,
So why not try these?
They come to your knees,
And what's more, you can earn yourself stickers!

I posted this in June 2015 but it was written in May 2008 for Pu55y Pow3r’s The Biggest Knickers in Britain (photo by Stéph Bosset, 2012)

Sara and other poets in the audience, everyone is smiling at the performer.

Birthday Limerick (for Andrea Spisto)

Worlds of meaning in every word bomb,
And you handle it with such aplomb;
From New York to Berlin,
Home's wherever you win;
Ask the Londoners "where are you from?"

Written 6 July 2015 for Andrea, a Venezuelan American in London, referring to her poem Where are you from?

Back To The Future Limerick

Zany colours and paper-thin plot,
If you're hoping for Chekhov, it's not;
Tiny substance, big style,
Keeps us happy a while...
For your critique we don't give a jot.

Written on 21 October 2015 in honour of Back To The Future Day.

20th Birthday Limerick

Seven years ago turning thirteen,
Dunno where went the time in between,
Did you cause me to fret?
I completely forget...
Gaze averted, y'know wot I mean 😉

Written in January 2016 for my daughter turning 20. The photo is of us on her 13th birthday.

Limericks as memories

Until I started reviewing the verses I wrote a decade ago I didn’t realise I had created a memory bank. Many of the limericks are too specific to a place and time to be worth sharing out-of-context; actually very few are relatable if you weren’t there when they were written.

Jay Base who called me “female albino Don Letts” died in January 2020. We used to have song battles too, this will always make me think of him…

Almost all the limericks on this page were written after the longer poems which are the next collection, via the link below:
