Sonnet on Possessiveness
Possession is still nine-tenths of the law;
Each patriarchal capitalist's quest:
Divide and conquer, multiply the score,
So one per cent possesses all the rest.
Possess the food, the water, power, land,
The animals are products bought and sold,
The art, the music, dreams we understand,
Must profit yield one-hundred-thousand-fold.
But as for us, possessive potentates,
You might as well attempt to own the air,
A thing times'd by itself extrapolates,
And entropies until you learn to share.
When you already have thrice all you need,
The cube root of all evil is your greed.

The aspects of commodification in western necro-capitalist culture and the globalised exploitation of humans and non-human nature really has increased exponentially in the decade since I wrote this. Wealth inequality has never been higher in the UK, millions are living in poverty, including over 3 million children in absolute poverty.
“Possession is nine-tenths of the law” is an expression meaning that ownership is easier to maintain if one has possession of something, or difficult to enforce if one does not.
