Sonnet on Wanting
Coincidence of wants is sorely won,
That wanting one another will accord;
The one you want will want you till they've done,
Then wanting someone else unsheathe the sword,
And sever with a savage belly blow
Serenity, so settling the score,
With siren uppermost and bile below...
You've had your fun, you don't get well no more.
With sweating hands and icy heart contend
With wanting so, confusing what you need,
Deluded that your wanting's without end,
And driven to distraction by your greed;
This urgency consumes your mind and soul,
So find your gonads and some self control.

“You’ve had your fun, you don’t get well no more” is a direct quote from “I Want You” by Elvis Costello
Costello wrote that “[t]he sound of this track was always going to be the aural equivalent of a blurred polaroid, so no apologies for the lack of fidelity. None are needed, it’s just a pornographic snapshot; lots of broken glass, a squashed box of chocolates and a little blood on the wall.”
