Sonnet on Masking
Disguises are most guilelessly displayed,
And whether eyes wide open or tight shut,
You feign surprise this mindless masquerade
Delivers deft and cold the deepest cut.
If no one is at all as they allege
Then who have you been talking to all night?
When person none's prepared to passion pledge
You wonder if this subterfuge is right.
When individuality they squeeze,
And stifled talent's frantic to express,
So multiply the personalities,
And be whoever else with no redress;
A gardener or poet if you can,
Or better still, a reconstructed man.
